June 2, 2011

This past weekend we drove around el Lago Enriquillo, a large lake near the Haitian border.  The loop took about 4 hours, during which we saw amazing scenery, cute villages, and this tree tunnel.  It was nearly solid for an entire 3 miles, and it just seems imposible that it would be natural, as just outside the two rows of trees was farmland, but people in the country don't really pay too much attention to asthetics.  Perhaps we will solve the mystery next time we go.  More pictures from this trip to come.

In Santo Domingo, as well as Barahona, Moterbike drivers are requiered to wear helmets.  Very few do, and when they do, they will have them pearched on top of their heads, unbuckled and ineffective.  There is no consequence for wearing a helmet incorrectly.

We didn't actually have time to go in the church, but I was able to take this picture from outside the walls.  I think it is just really beautiful, and would love to know more about it.

In the cortyard of the church from the previous post, a group of boys were playing stick ball with a bottle cap.  The white buildings are their Liceo, or high school, which is housed in some of the buildings of the church, built in the 1500's.

We went to Santo Domingo a nd got to do a TINY bit of sight seeing.  I was particularly taken with the colonial zone, and the history it contains.  As this sign says, this church was built between 1527 and 1555, and contain the only gothic arcade in the entire Americas.  More pictures to follow.

Another Lizard friend!  I call them friends because they eat the mosquitos and spiders in our houses, even though it is weird to share a home with lizards running free.

Another beautiful sunset over the river in La Hoya.  Just too pretty not to share.

Some girls in La Hoya dancing a singing for an assembly.  These girls are very creative and love to make new dances every chance they get.  They also recently did a ribbon dance which was just beautiful.

One of our Project Trust girls, Catherine, gets a refreshing (freezing!) rinse off after a swim in the salt water.  While it is fun and refreshing for us, this is the only shower some people have access to.

This is a picture of the Project Trust girls' living room, dining room, and kitchen in La Hoya.  In the house they also have a shared bathroom, and a shared  bedroom this same size.  It is cozy, but it works!

Diego is a young man from Bombita that makes the trip to La Hoya every Saturday to play the bongos for a praise and worship service, as well as the Sunday morning service.  His friend Josey comes with him to play the key board.  These guys are very talented, and sacrifice alot of time for the church here.

Here is one of our many lizard friends that visits us at the office in La Hoya.  I watched this guy go from a pale brown color to this brillant green, it was amazing!

The La Hoya Pre Escolar (pre school) kids all dressed up for an assembly at the school.

On a stormy day the Dominican Republic reminds me a bit of home (Colorado).  I love these low hanging clouds, and the cooler temperatures they bring!

May 19 (Long over due!)

A gorgeous flora lined pathway leading out of the COPA compound in La Hoya.  We have been getting small showers almost every day for the past week so the flower are really coming to life!
